On October 20, 2023, the City of Brevard and Heart of Brevard will host a celebration to mark the installation of a Moms Mabley historical marker on West Main Street by the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

Born Loretta Aiken in 1894, “Moms” Mabley was a pioneer Black comedian as well as a social and civil rights activist. The North Carolina Highway Historical Marker Program recognizes sites and persons of statewide historical significance, and the City looks forward to celebrating this commemoration of Mabley’s life and trailblazing career.

The dedication will be held at Clemson Plaza, just a quarter mile down the road from Mabley’s childhood home, and will include remarks from local Brevard residents. More information about the Moms Mabley historical marker can be found on the NC Highway Historical Markers Program’s website.
