City Manager Wilson Hooper has named Alex Shepherd of Kernersville as Brevard’s new Assistant to the City Manager. This position, formerly classified as the Executive Assistant to the City Manager, provides professional-level support to Brevard’s appointed administrative officials.

“This new position will support me, the Assistant City Manager, and the City Clerk in our roles facilitating the City Council’s policy work,” said Hooper. “It’s a hybrid role. Alex will take ownership of our policy and advisory committee tasks, organizing those meetings from a logistical and content perspective. But he’ll also work on tasks that some organizations have budget or management analysts for like helping us build our budget and tracking the effectiveness of our services.”

Shepherd has two years of experience as a Financial Specialist with the City of High Point’s Parks & Recreation Department and two years of experience as a Financial Services Representative with the NC State Employees Credit Union (NCSECU). He also completed certificate courses at the UNC School of Government in Local Government Finance and Budgeting. Shepherd has a master’s degree in public administration and a bachelor’s degree in finance/economics, both from the University of North Carolina Greensboro. In early 2023, he was awarded a scholarship for his studies by the NC City/County Management Association.

Shepherd will start work with the City of Brevard on July 3, 2023.
