BREVARD CITY COUNCIL SEEKS APPLICANTS FOR POLICY AND ADVISORY COMMITTEES
[BREVARD, N.C. January 27, 2023] – As part of its effort to maintain an informed and high-performing governing body, the City of Brevard utilizes committees to receive input from experts and citizens on matters of public concern.
Last fall, the City Council approved a series of reforms to its committee process. As a result, a number of committees have open seats that the City now wishes to fill with committed and engaged citizens.
Therefore, the City formally invites individuals interested in participating in Brevard’s policymaking process to visit https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/brevard and apply to serve. Applications will be accepted through the month of February.
Visitors to the City’s website will see six distinct job listings: four for ‘policy committees’ and one each for ‘advisory committees’ and ‘statutory/code’ committees.
Policy Committees are the official subcommittees of City Council. They are:
- Human Resources, Finance, and Appointment Committee
- Public Safety Committee
- Public Works & Utilities Committee
- Housing Committee
Policy Committees review policies governing the City’s portfolio of services. They are made up of two council members and one appointed resident. The seat reserved for residents is currently vacant in all four committees. To be eligible, candidates must be residents of Brevard. Applicants interested in serving on a Policy Committee should fill out the application for the committee of their choice.
Advisory Committees are boards voluntarily established by City Council to receive citizen input on matters of public interest. They are:
- Parks, Trails & Recreation Committee
- Downtown Master Plan Committee
- Rosenwald Advisory Committee
- Ecusta Trail Advisory Board
- Short Term Rental Task Force
Advisory Committees are made up of two council members, and a mixture of at-large seats and seats designated for members of affiliated groups. The number of at-large and designated seats is different for each committee, but all will have openings for at large applicants once current terms expire. Applicants interested in serving on one or more of these bodies should complete the Advisory Board application. They will be placed in a candidate pool and considered as seats open. Applicants need not be residents of the City of Brevard to be eligible. To be eligible, applicants must, in the opinion of the City Council, “be vested, with a personal or professional stake in the affairs of the City of Brevard or in the commerce of the community.”
Statutory/Code Committees are bodies established by law, that are endowed by code or statute with specific roles and responsibilities that support the City’s activities. They are:
- Planning Board
- Board of Adjustment
- ABC Board of Directors
- Brevard Housing Authority
- Firefighters Relief Fund
- Terrell L Scruggs Scholarship Trust Committee
Council members do not participate in these boards, but instead collectively appoints their members. The composition of the code/statutory boards differs from group to group, though all but the ABC Board have a mixture of at-large seats and seats designated for individuals residing in certain geographical areas. Applicants interested in serving on one or more of these bodies should complete the Statutory/Code Committee application. They will be placed in a candidate pool and considered as seats open.
The City Council is also soliciting applicants for its appointee to the Transylvania Economic Alliance. Interested applicants should apply using the Statutory/Code Committees application.
