[ARCHIVED] Build Responsibly in Flood Areas

Cropped wet Cars_rounded

It is important to build responsibly, especially in flood-prone areas. Please make sure you do all three of these things before building:

  1. Get Correct Permits - When building in the SFHA you will need a floodplain development permit in addition to a typical zoning permit. These ensure that you are in compliance with local, state, and federal development standards, saving you time and money in the long-run.
  2. Know Substantial Damage Rules - If you project is 50% or more of the appraised value of your home you may be subject to additional compliance standards.
  3. Install Silt Fencing - Whenever you disturb dirt you need to install silt fencing on the downward slope so the sediment that is washed away during a rain event does not end up in a stream. Repair blow-out silt fencing after rainstorms.
